Feeling a bit adrift or unmotivated as a business owner is entirely normal, especially after being in the game for a while. One of the first things I do with my clients when they hit this point is to revisit the foundational elements of their business: Mission, Vision, and Values. Just like understanding your Ideal Client, these elements evolve. If you’re feeling listless in your business, starting here can ground you and clarify the road ahead.

Mission: Defining Your Purpose

Your mission is the heartbeat of your business. It’s what makes you money today and defines why your organization exists. Your mission should answer questions like:

– What do you do as a business and provide to your clients?

– Why does your business exist?

– How do you do it?

– What value are you bringing to your clients?

If your mission statement sounds generic or could be mistaken for that of any of your competitors, it’s time to dig deeper. Be specific. The more detailed and unique your mission is, the more it will resonate with both you and your clients.

Mission Statement Example:

“I empower business owners with strategies that give them the freedom and time to do what they love. I work with businesses that have been established for over three years and are ready to level up but need a strategic partner to help them get there. I offer a Business Plan, one-on-one Coaching, and Fractional Director of Operations (DOO) services.”

Vision: Charting Your Future

Your vision is where you’re headed in the next 3-5 years. It paints a picture of the future you want to create for your business. When crafting your vision, consider the following:

– What problems do you expect to solve in the next few years?

– What does your ideal business look like in the future?

Your vision statement should be aspirational, giving you something to strive toward and a clear direction for your business decisions.

Vision Statement Example:

“I work with business owners who have been in business for 3+ years and are looking for a partner to help them reach their next level. My offerings include Business Mapping Plans, 1-1 Coaching, and Fractional DOO services. In the future, I envision a collaborative team supporting my clients, including a fantastic assistant, an outside marketing team, a bookkeeper, a tax professional, and my own fractional DOO. By 2025, my business will generate at least $100,000, allowing me to work a 4-day week with no weekends, enjoy shorter hours in the summer, and take a month off each year to recharge. I will live my dream life in Washington, fully enjoying the rewards of my work.”

Values: Guiding Principles

Your values are the core beliefs that guide your business decisions and interactions. They define how you treat your employees, contributors, and customers. They reflect what’s important to your company and what you won’t compromise on.

Consider:

– How do you wish to treat people in and around your business?

– What is non-negotiable in your business operations?

– What don’t you want to feel as a business owner?

Core Values Example:

– Approachable

– Professional

– Relationship-driven

– Passionate

– Focused on Execution

– Committed to Education

– Strong Communication

– Humor

– Respect for Knowledge

– Collaboration

– Positivity balanced with Realism

– Accountability

– Respect for Boundaries

Lifestyle Choices and Goals

Your mission, vision, and values should naturally lead to your lifestyle choices and goals. Consider the flexibility you want regarding time and location, the ease of work and relationships, and the abundance you seek in time, resources, opportunities, and income.

From here, draw your long-term goals and break them down into actionable 3-year and 1-year plans. This process ensures that your business aligns with your purpose and supports the lifestyle you desire.

By revisiting and refining your Mission, Vision, and Values, you can reconnect with your purpose, clarify your future direction, and create a business that truly works for you. Start here if you’re feeling lost or unsure of your next steps. This foundational work will ground you and guide you toward a fulfilling and prosperous future.
